“The LORD had said to Abram, ‘Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you" (Genesis 12:1).
One question many believers ask is, "How do I know if God is speaking to me?" And when the subject of marriage comes up, that question often becomes even more urgent: "How will I know if he or she is the one?"
The fear behind that question is understandable. People do not want to make a costly mistake in such an important area of life. But the answer is often simpler than we make it. The way God leads you in other areas of your life is the same way He will lead you in marriage. He is not a God who only becomes interested when the matter feels big to you. He cares about every part of your life. He is a Father, and He desires to guide His children in all things.
When God spoke to Abram, His instruction was clear and definite. Abram was to leave his country, his relatives, and his father’s household and go to the land God would show him. The call was specific. The direction was real. Abram’s response required trust, obedience, and movement.
That same God still speaks today. He is not silent. He speaks because He is alive, and He speaks because He desires relationship. Jesus said that His sheep hear His voice. God speaks to reveal His will, to guide our steps, and to draw us into closer fellowship with Him. One of the primary ways He does this is through His written Word. Every time you read Scripture with an open heart, you are not merely reading a book. You are giving attention to the voice and heart of God.
This is where we as believers must become more settled. We often want dramatic signs, unusual experiences, or outward confirmations, while neglecting the clearest channel through which God already speaks. God may use dreams, wise counsel, conviction in your heart, a sermon, or even a timely word from a trusted source. But every other channel must be tested by His written Word. If it does not align with Scripture, it is not safe to follow.
His Word is your anchor. When your heart is trained to honor Scripture above feelings, pressure, excitement, or spiritual experiences, you become harder to mislead. You grow in discernment. You learn to recognize what sounds like God and what does not. You become steadier, wiser, and more confident in following His leading.
Sometimes the issue is not that God is not speaking. It is that we are looking for His voice everywhere except where He has already chosen to speak most clearly.
So if you want to hear God more clearly, begin by honoring His Word more deeply. Build your life around what He has already said. The more you value His voice in Scripture, the more clearly you will recognize His leading in the practical details of life.
When was the last time you truly slowed down to read and listened to what He is saying to you through His written word?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You because You still speak and You still lead Your children. Help me to honor Your written Word above every other voice, feeling, or impression. Train my heart to recognize Your leading and to trust what You have said. Make me sensitive to Your voice and obedient to Your instruction. In Jesus’ name, amen.
