"Early the next morning, Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the LORD. He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of the plain, and he saw the smoke rising from the land like smoke from a furnace" (G0en 19"27,28).
After Abraham’s conversation with the Lord about Sodom, he rose early the next morning and returned to the place where he had stood before God. He looked out across the plain toward Sodom and Gomorrah and saw smoke rising from the land like smoke from a furnace. As far as Abraham could see, destruction had come, and nothing had been spared.
This must have been a difficult moment for him. Lot, his nephew, and his family lived there. Abraham had pleaded with God. He had asked. He had stood before the Lord. And now, when he looked, all he could see was smoke.
Many of us know that place; we pray, we stand on God’s Word, and we believe. But when we look for evidence, all we seem to see is more smoke. No visible change, no clear sign, no proof that anything is happening. And if we are not careful, disappointment can slowly silence our prayers.
I remember a season when my family was praying about a particular matter. We kept looking for visible evidence that God had heard us. But every time we looked, the situation appeared unchanged. The more we looked, the more discouraged I became. Eventually, I stopped praying about it and stopped expecting. However, all through that time, the Lord had been speaking about the matter. So the problem was not that God was silent. The problem was that I wanted physical evidence to confirm what He had said.
And that is where many of us struggle.
We are often willing to trust God, as long as we can also see something. But faith does not live by visible proof. Faith lives by the character of God and the certainty of His Word. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believe (John 20:29). That is the posture of mature faith.
Sometimes, when you cannot see the answer, God is still working. Sometimes, when all you see is smoke, heaven has already moved. Abraham saw smoke, but that was not the whole story. God had remembered Abraham and delivered Lot. What Abraham could not see with his natural eyes, God had already handled by His mercy.
This is why we must learn to walk by faith and not by sight. His Word is your evidence. His integrity is your assurance. His timing is still perfect, even when it feels hidden. What He has spoken is more reliable than what you can see, hear, or feel.
So do not let the smoke talk you out of what God has said. Do not let delay convince you that God has denied you. Keep standing. Keep believing. Keep praying. The visible evidence may not be in front of you yet, but that does not mean God is absent. He is faithful, and in His time, what He has spoken will become plain.
Prayer: Father, thank You because You are faithful, even when I cannot yet see what You are doing. Help me to trust Your Word more than my feelings, my fears, or what is happening around me. Strengthen my heart to keep believing, keep praying, and keep standing in faith. When all I see is smoke, remind me that You are still at work. In Jesus’ name, amen.
